Copy my local newsletter tech stack (2026)

This week I wanted to share my local newsletter tech stack I use to help run my weekly local newsletter every week to 118 residents in my city.

So let’s get into it.

beehiiv

As you know beehiiv is my go-to email service provider to send and host my local newsletter. I’ve been using it for 3 years and still a big fan of the product.

Google Doc’s

I use Google Doc to collect the events I’m going to add to the newsletter, I use it because it’s easy to organize the information for me to quickly copy and paste. And I can access it from anywhere as well.

Unsplash

So I only use Unsplash a bit, it’s mostly when I need images/videos to promote the newsletter, for example on Instagram stories - If you haven’t tried it, you should there are so many great images/videos that can help with marketing.

Facebook Pages

I have a local Facebook Page for the local newsletter so I can upload reels, it’s not an area I’m focusing too much but with 1 billion active users every day - it’s an outlet I’m not ignoring too.

Reddit

I use Reddit as a marketing platform where I can share events on the local sub reddit and then try to get subscribers when they check out my Reddit post.

I’ve been playing around with different formats to avoid being blocked, so far I’ve found a format that has been working where the mods haven’t blocked me yet.

Instagram

As you know I’ve been using Instagram to help grow the local newsletter, it’s an outlet I’m using to help get the name of the newsletter out there.

And also it’s turned into a great source for getting event suggestions from local residents in my DMs. (I didn’t see that one coming)

I use a simple mic that I got on Amazon to make sure the reels I record on Instagram sounds crispy.

My go-to device to record my reels for instagram, to engage with other local business/creators, and to capture events.

Arc browser

It’s just my go-to browser

City of Ottawa Site

To come up with content ideas, I use this as my main source to find interesting things that are happening in the city.

For example, last weekend it was Ottawa Day - no big news outlet shared that it was Ottawa Day. So this helped with standing out.

google sheets

I use Google sheets to help track events, that people submit.

I use Google Forms, to have local residents submit events.

So that’s my local newsletter tech stack, it’s simple and boring which is how I like it.

I don’t want it to be complicated where it will take me time to create content.
